2500 Sump

#1 Post by tr250 »

I'm almost ready to drop a late TR6 engine in my 2000. My question regards the 2500 sump. Is it angled to compensate for the slant of the engine? Putting it another way, can I simply use an early TR6 sump instead of using a 2000 sump and beating reliefs to clear the rod bolts?

Is the only difference between the 2500 & TR6 sumps the position of the drain? I guess the drain was moved on the later TR6

Regards

Hi Todd,

I did much the same years ago. Yes, the drain is different on a TR6 engine (at the front I think?), so will need moving. A relatively easy brazing job.

Don't be tempted to try a 2000 sump. With the increased stroke, the big ends will hit the sump pan. Been there and done that!

Cheers,
Mike.

Hiya Mike

So the drain needs to be on the side? And if so, which side? I have several TR6 pans of different years. Seems to me having the drain plug on front/middle vs the left side, more oil would drain from the middle. My current 2000 pan has the drain on the left side.

Witor led me to believe the p/n the TR number for the sump is 307836. This corresponds to an early TR6 sump where the drain is in the middle

Bottom line, can I use a TR6 sump providing I get the drain in the right place? And if so, where should the drain be? Will I need to shim the engine mounts...it's a manual rack?

Cheers

Hi Todd,

I think once you've moved the drain, you can use the TR6 sump as-is. I certainly did!

The drain plug is at the same place as on the 2000 sump, LHS, near the front of the lower part of the sump (I think - all from memory). As I recall, there is a flat area there where the saloon drain plug is fitted. When I fitted a TR6 engine to my Mk1 saloon (in about 1979!) I had a local shop remove the plug, block the hole, re-drill a new hole and re-braze the plug back in again.

Cheers,
Mike.

So my 2000 sump has the drain on the LHS rear. I have available an early sump where the drain is front middle or left side rear. Since the engine slants the other way. I would think right side front or rear would be better, by maybe front middle would be ok?

A picture from anyone would be wonderful

You've got me thinking now Todd!

I'll see if I can photograph something, either my current PI or the sump on that TR6 engine (which I still have!)

Hi Todd,

I found some images of a TR6 and PI sump but I can't add them at the moment - it looks like the forum has reached it's storage limit!

If you PM me your email address, I'll can send them directly.

Cheers,
Mike.

With any car I've ever owned I drain the oil by jacking it on the side opposite to the drain plug.
