Distributor for Triumph 2000

#1 Post by Bruce »

Hello all this is my first post on the site . My rotor arm broke up and the parts fell into the distributor bending the lower plate and breaking the spring location turrets on the bottom plate . I want to get a replacement distributor with electronic ignition . The distributor is an ( I think ) a Lucas 25 D6. Where is the best and fastest supplier . Need your help ASAP :(

I've this week fitted an electronic distributor from www.simonbbc.co.uk, very quickly delivered, cost about £80, is a direct replacement and so far so good, has transformed cold and hot starting, general running so overall very pleased and would recommend it as a quick solution.

I'm going to Jove my original rebuilt too as a spare.

Hi thanks for the quick reply - just spent the last 2 hours rebuilding the distributor with spare bits from the garage and got the engine running . I think I will take your advice and order one - can you give me the part no details ? Regards bruce

Hi Forgot to say the 2000 auto engine is fitted to a Triumph Roadster 1949.
Also how difficult was it to set the electronic ignition up ?

Hello Robin,

when you bought that distributor, did you specify what model and year your car is? From his website he lists a 25D6 replacement and a 45D6 replacement but when you look at the workshop manual there are about 12 or 14 different specifications of distributor fitted to the 2000 range with quite different characteristics depending on the engine?

Bruce, if you search the site it comes up as a 25D6. There is no setting up, just install, wire up the cap, timing and that's it.

Alec, I did tell him what car it was for, all I know is it substantially better than it was before misfire so I'm happy with it.

Hello Robin,

did you notice if there was a reference number stamped on the body, 5 numbers with possibly a letter suffix? This denotes the specification?

Hello Chaps - good info from members about the distributor . I went to http://www.simonbbc.co.uk and told them I had a Triumph 2000 Mk1 twin stromberg auto engine. They sold me a 25D6 Triumph Standard Electronic Distributor, Red 8mmHT Leads & DLB105 Gold Sports Coil. for £108 19 including vat and postage . The instructions to fit it were simple and the car fired after the 2nd reposition of the distributor. Rotation of the distributor to achive max revs at tick over worked ok. As a result of your additional comments I have checked out the engine no (remember the engine is fitted to a 1949 Triumph roadster) .The details are as follows Engine no MB949FRL , Bores -STD F, Main Journal -STD & Big End Journals -STD.

Where can I find a picture for the twin strmberg linkage set up as i have alot of play on the cab linkage that couples to a 'kick down' ? cable My hyanes manual is a bit sparse.

best regards bruce

Hello Bruce,
I hope I've caught you in time. I would give someone like the Distributor Doctor a ring first before you go for one of those enticing 'new' and 'cheap' distributors from BBC. While it would appear to be a no brainer, I had gone down the same road and bought one from BBC. They fit on to the engine and work a treat up until they're just out of warranty, 12 to 18-months or so.

I don't know what part of the world the electrical components come from, but lets just say it's not Japan. I had to buy a second hand genuine Lucas to replace the crap BBC one which failed on me after 18-months.

A false economy methinks...Good luck.
