Hi Simon
I’ve used Plumbers Mait as a good sealant for these jobs. It’s a non setting type of putty very similar to the what was originally used around the top of struts. I used it when I renewed the front struts on my car and it done the job perfectly. It’s available from your local plumbing shop or Screwfix & Tool Station. It lasts well so you’ll find it won’t go to waste! There are also similar alternatives available.
