2500 engine woe

#1 Post by TR7Driver »

Took my automatic 2.5ltr engined 2000 saloon to Classic Le Mans all went well but I've decided to change autobox to an O/D manual if I can find one.

What I did discover was the next day when I started the engine, I got an ominous metallic dull thump/clonk sound from the block at stall speed but it shut up at normal tick over. Don't think its big ends I know what they sound like, I think it may be crank related. Any ideas?

Anyone got a 2.5ltr engine they don't want?

Glad to hear the 2000 is back on the road Jim. What you need is a nice V8 and 4 spd auto! - Tows the caravan a treat!

I go along with that, Alan. I recall that the first time I came across it I was astounded that a deep rumble could come from a break in a thin metal plate. I thought it was main bearing trouble until an oil pressure check indicated otherwise.

Have you got a viscous coupled fan? When the coupling goes, they make a sound like that.

Cheers,
Mike.

Thanks for that Dave, certainly fancy the V8 option espacially as I've a couple of them spare but I need a quick and easy swap as the Dolly won't be ready for the RBRR 'cos I've spent so much time on the saloon. I've decided to source all bits needed to convert to Manual O/D (all donations gratefully received) and when I drop the box see what I find.
