Just checked with "the Boss", and she is off that day.

I feel a family picnic day out coming on!

Ok, count us in!

Hello Robin,

check and reset the points if required before thinking about replacing the coil. It may well be completely serviceable?
If the gap is OK, consider changing the condenser? You may well wish to change to an electronic system but I would get it running properly on the points first so you know where you are.

Thanks Alec

The points and condenser were replaced with new on Friday along with Cap, Rotor, Leads and plugs - but will check the gap first and go from there.

Cheers

It is actually called the BMC day ( that is you are referring to Ferry Meadows) and is a good family day out................may need rob piggy bank Alan.

Boating lake and nearby Steam railway attractions.

However, if the weather persists it down I can envisage this event being cancelled like many other events have already been....................... :(

Shame as it is a good day out and I have been attending for 6 years

How much is the entrance then Lee (if you are not in a BL car?)

Might be a no go anyway, Both children been invited to two different birthday parties on that day, and this may take preference over a field full of old cars!

Don't qoute me but I think you just pay for car parking at the entrance which was about £5..................

Modern cars are not allowed on the rally field and and have to park in car parks. I think once parked up the show itself is free entrance as there is no way to police it from pedestrian public.

Welcome to the juggling world of youngsters that take priority............ :D

Hello Robin,

I saw that from your initial post but there have been instances of poor quality points and condensers.

Well, now I'm even more confused !

Powerspark electronic ignition fitted, along with a new coil, all leads checked and after some faffing about with the distributor it ran, timing set and it was sweet.

Gave it a few revs to a few thousand and it backfires, loudly and dies - then wouldn't restart.

After much more faffing, and with the distributor in a completely different position, by about 15 degrees, it's running sweetly again, timing now more like 18 degrees, but sweet.

The same thing happens again and again, the final timing reading with it idling sweetly was 36 degrees !!!!

I've put it away so I don't get annoyed with it, and it's running, but I bet it doesn't start tomorrow.

The only thing I can think of is a worn distributor ?

Any other ideas chaps ?

Robin, sounds stupid but it has been done by more than one of us on the Forum, does your timing light have any other functions (advance setting etc) that you need to zero before use?
