Hello Andrew,

I'm not so familiar with Strombergs, but it sounds like the float valve is either not sealing, maybe due to dirt, or the floats themselves are stuck\punctured? Usually it is the valve that is the problem?

Hello Andrew,

it depends on what general condition they are, or is the car new to you?

Personally I would try and sort the problem first, it may be relatively cheap, as I say as simple as some muck in the float valve.

Hi Andrew

Yes the float needle valve will have muck in it and the carbs themselves are easy to remove and strip to cure. However just a few problem areas I've experienced to save this problem reaccurring for you.

Firstly its probably a good idea to fit new needle valves whilst the carbs are off. BE VERY CAREFUL when removing them as one slip with the spanner and you can easily break off one of the float supports.

Set the float height as accurately as possible as per the manual.

When you have the carbs off check that the connecting metal fuel pipe assembly (which connects the carbs together)isnt full off rust and debri. many of them are full of corruption and the problem will just persist. You can replace with flexible fuel pipe and a T piece if its shot, its also a good adea to stick an inline plastic filter just before.

Lastly if you are sourcing parts particularly needle valves get them from Burlen or a good quality source and check that they are for your 150 carbs. They should have 150 stamped on them Burlen part number B19052. If they have 175 stamped on them they are for 175 strombergs part number B19053 and although they will work you might get intermittent flooding under heavy braking. Many suppliers only have the 175 valves and supply them thinking they are interchangeable. They fit but they are not right.

Great carbs when you get them on song.

Cheers

I'm trying to think which hole on the side carb the fuel would come from as I can't recall there being any overflows on mine.

When I had a jammed needle valve on one carb the fuel came out of the carb inlet, i.e. into the air filter, not from a hole on the side but I suppose anything's possible and there are quite a few variants of Stromberg 150 carburettor.

On some CD carbs there should be a link hose allowing fuel to flow from the front carb to the rear one when the choke is in use. I wonder if that could be missing on yours?

Mine are CDS, with the mixture adjustment screw underneath as opposed to the later CDSE which are adjusted with a special tool through the dashpot.

I had a leak from one of my adjustement screws (on the bottom of the carb) so bought a seal and gasket kit from Chris Witor and reassembled the carbs, problem solved!

Incidentally, the Haynes manual is excellent in its coverage on carburettor overhauls on these cars.
