Electrical question

Hi all, just registered as I have just bought myself a late MK1 2000 with a later TC engine in. No stranger to Triumphs mind having owned 1300 Dolly, '63 Vitesse (with overdrive and sunroof) and still own a '67 1200 convertible. If I ingnore the bottom 6", it is in really rather good original unmolested condition. Oh yes there is rather alot of the dreaded tin worm however!! I have had a laugh already looking at the bodywork section on here...who knows it might even be ready for my two and half year old daughter to learn to drive in.

I have started on the easier stuff; replacement bulbs, some minor electrics etc but I wondered if anyone has any advice on the side light switch which as far as I can gather works the sight lights, rear lights, rear number plate lights and the dashboard lights. The main fuse is fine and as other electrics ok so I doubt an earth problem. I am guessing therefore a faulty switch. The headlight switch is fine and dip/beam works. How do I remove it without doing any damage and it is a bugger to from the back! or do I need to check something else.

I will post some photos shortly and you can all tell me that it would be best to break but I am not that way inclined - yet. The guy I bought it off would not let it go to a banger's convention for more than I paid for it so I feel some sense of responsibility.

Thanks in advance Nick

Hello Nick,

I gather you have no side lights whatsoever?

If the headlights work then the switch has power to it. The sidelights go from the switch to a fuse. This fuse has a red\green cable to the top and should be live with the sidelights switched on. If it is then it is probably a duff fuse or as is very often the case poor contacts in the fuse holder itself. The side light cables are red, by the way.

Yes, the switch is fiddly to remove, take out the instrument binnacle and you can just reach the two nuts that secure the switch 3\8" a\f I think from memory. Do first disconnect the battery as the feed is permanently live to it.
