You can never be TOO organised!!!

#1 Post by Forkie »

Well I thought I would pop this in - may give a smile here and there :) I thought I did a good job when I stripped my rear end out (of the car that is) of bagging/labeling etc and making notes of the bits that I thought may confuse me in the future, knowing things would probably take longer than expected - and it did. And along the way new or NOS bits were bought and stored.....in,i thought,an organised manner...
So fast forward a number of years, bits are going back on and a few days ago it was time to re-fit the rear brakes, starting with the NOS Unipart shoes with adjusters to the backplates. ( I had already done the N/S years ago just before the strip down - I forget why only the one side was done now but it is all unused and has been stored all fitted up ready) . So I only have the O/S to do. I have been staring at a Unipart box containing a pair of shoes on top of a cupboard ever since - with glee a couple of days ago I grabbed the box - blew off the dust - tipped out the contents .....out came a set of old, contaminated used shoes  !!! Where are my new ones! They were obviously my old ones from the N/S - so where are the other set ! It was only then that it dawned on me that I should of been seeing TWO boxes - not just one!! By this evening I have also realised that not only am I 'missing' a set of shoes, but also a handbrake cable and ONE rear braided brake pipe  All my Triumph stash places searched since - to no avail :x
So back to the title - I deem myself to be pretty organised - obviously not!!

P.S. if any 'man cave specialists' are reading and have an idea of why and where I may of hidden this secret stash in a totally different place please give me a pointer

Or is it dementia REALLY setting in!!!

This is not unusual!!

My restoration took almost 6 years to complete, but I also moved house in the middle which really didn't help!
To date I still can't find;

Screws to hold the sunvisors on
My nos front discs I know I bought
The sound deadening from under the rear seat

I suspect that restoration gremlins have stolen them!!!!

Well I HAVE NOT moved house in that time - so does that make it worse
It's just making me so mad with myself ' what HAVE I done with those parts?' - I even went through my receipts last night to prove to myself that I DID buy them
I'm glad I am not on my own then. It just means i'm ripping the house apart just to prove a point

Buy some more, then you'll find the first lot to keep as spares, but when you need them, they'll have disappeared again  Been there, done that!

it seems to work in reverse as well sometimes. I find parts for vehicles that I have never owned. Like a windscreen wiper motor for a Leyland Atlantean bus, for example...

But I don't have a cat !!! Or a dog even  The 'buy more ' I get - once bought I KNOW the other bits will turn up. For me though it is 'personal punishment' - ' you now HAVE to de-clutter the man cave that you have put off for soooo long, just to prove that those parts never existed'

Kevin - almost the opposite - but probably just as daft - i'm finding stuff for vehicles that I DID own - 20 years ago - so why am I keeping hold of stuff for a car that I will never own again!!!!

You think you have problems  This is part of my "small parts" room. They're also under the bed.

I moved house last year and when I cleared out may old garage, I found loads of parts I didn't know I had..... Stuff I'd obviously bought as spares, or 'just in case' and forgotten about........

I also found 4 soldering irons, multiple saws, paintbrushes, spanners, pipe benders, flaring tools etc that I have replaced as I couldn't find them previously....

Also found parts off cars which are long gone!

Now I have a double garage, I put some rather large shelves up and all parts are now stored in order and on display.... hopefully will stop me buying duplicate parts / tools!!

Nah, doesn't work. Remember the rule that junk will always accumulate to the space available. So very soon the new shelves will be full and stuff will get hidden at the back.

True for me anyway!

The other rule is that you always need that elusive bit the day after you threw it away...

Cheers,
Mike.
