2000 or 2500 ?

Im not that up on the big saloon engines but how can you tell the difference between them just by looking at them ?

Not really - only external difference is bigger front harmonic damper and deeper sump. Engine number should work (and is a pretty safe bet in 95+% of engines but you can build a 2500 out of most 2000 blocks. The very skinny early Mk2 2000 head 3.3" is unlikely to work on a 2.5 unless its is very trick so thats a pointer.

2.5 Engines can be suffixed CR MG, MK (Oz 2.5TC) , MN or MM + CC, CF, CP, CR (TR6)

2000 Engines are ME and ML + HC KC KD KE KF KG (GT6 Vitesse)

I think the engine number starts with MM but will check tomorrow when its daylight.

Not sure if your asking for this much info, but the mk1 engines have the intake and exhaust manifold ports in a straight line. Not so sure on the later stuff, other than the 74 up TR6 engines have bigger ports spaced further apart I think. PI stuff might be different though.

Mk1/Mk2 heads are easy to tell the difference. Mk1 has the manifold side stud/nuts below the manifold, Mk2 are above and visible between the manifold face and the rocker cover.

MM sounds like a facelift 2500 then. Actually, 2000 and 2500 engines sound different, but that is a bit subjective!

Mk1 has what looks like exposed pushrod tubes either side of the spark plugs too.

this engine is in a car that ive got for spares recently, and it now ive found out its a p reg 2500 tc
there was no reg plates on it when i got it and the log book has been sent off as scrap,
it starts and runs but smokes so will want a strip down.
