Hi all,

Its been a while since I have posted. I live in the NW corner of the USA, and to say its been raining around here is an understatement. Which brings me to my questions.

1. Is there a supplier of headliners for the MK1 2000 saloons in the UK or do I just find material sorta close and have my upholstry guy have a go with it?

2. Witor offers the rear quarter window rubber, and the LHF wing/vent window rubber. So is there a place I can locate the RHF wing/vent window rubber? I have sourced a set of vent wings local to me, but the rubber is not much better than what I have.

As my car sat for many years in California, my next chore since getting the car running is to replace what is left of the all the window seals!

I have put 175 miles onto my 2000 since getting it running, and my only complaint so far has been a knocking noised traced to the stainless windshield trim starting to come loose.... Needless to say the wife was not impressed because we were a ways from home when it happened.

In c.1982 I bought a lot of 'new, old stock' Triumph parts from Chris Witor, autojumbles, etc, ready for a planned restoration of my T2500. These parts included two RHF quarterlight rubbers. I needed one of these rubbers for the restoration that I eventually carried out in the mid-late 1990s and I asked Chris Witor at that time if he'd swap the other for the LHF rubber that I was short of.

Chris told me that RHF rubbers were normally unattainable and he gave me a complete, new, LHF quarterlight assembly in exchange for it. And he was clearly delighted with the deal!

So unless some remanufacture has taken place since the 1990s, I think it is very unlikely that you'll find a new RHF rubber from the normal retail sources. Seems you'll have to keep looking for a decent used one.

Just got a reply back from Chris Witor, and he felt the headliners would be available sometime after the first of the year. Kyle.

I've wondered for a while now if the front 1/4 light rubbers could be another re-manufacturing contender, although the feasibility and cost of such an item is an unknown quantity to me ? Does anyone have any info regarding such a job

Headlining ! Is it that difficult to fit ? The screens have to come out. But what about all those wire hangers ? and stretching / heat and water. The job seems daunting and likely to be botched. WHO has actually done the job ( as opposed to read about it ). Can you use a DIY kit, or must you use a bespoke tailored kit.

I fitted one a long time ago. No heating or stretching required, the wire stays clip in to place but the glass does need to come out ( was doing a full repaint so they were out anyway. Glueing to he windows and the furflex area keeps it tight.

I don't remember it being difficult just a little messy with the adhesive.

With my car, the respray is a long ways out (besides I like the patina), but the windscreen seals front and rear have been shot for sometime.

As for fitting the headlining, I was planning to leave it to a professional, as i dont want to mess it up, and probably have a professional windshield guy reinstall the windows.

I would be interested in the front wing window seals, should anyone ever decide to remake them.

I fitted new seals to my old Citroen CX after being horrified at the price of the aftermarket ones -

if you send them a sample they will match it with a modern equivalent.

My seals are very hard now and need replacing.

There is a recent article in Practical Classics about restoring perished window and door seals - essentially using a combination of black rubber adhesive and another compound (I'll check) which if rubbed into the perished rubber (over several hours) can restore them to their former rubberieness

are also very helpful and have sourced uber rare stuff for me in the past including a roof seal for a 1974 Leyland Sherpa Autosleeper Campervan.

One of the advantages that we have as owners of a car built by the mighty Leyland was the use of the 'communal parts bin' which means that frequently seals etc are a match for other British cars of the period but also check British commercial vehicles of the period as well - sometimes the parts were used on them and in some cases are manufactured for vehicles still being build in other parts of the world - a friend sourced some rare grommets from a factory in India that uses them on those lorries you see on 'the worlds most scary roads' type programmes.

Anyway, it might be worth us having a word with seals direct about getting a pattern quarter window seal made up - I'm sure it won't be that much of an issue for them if we could pledge a few dozen

headlinings are easy to fit but would recommend another pair of hands.

Think Witor had one of these in stock to but you can get a good aftermarket one that is a close patter match to the original.

not sure of the in's and out's but the stag owners club have remade these,are they not the same?
