New car find not starting yet

#1 Post by canberra triumph »

Hi folks.

I have been given another 2500TC, ostensibly for parts, as it is the same year (1976) and colour (green) as my existing drive.

The car looked to good to just wreck for parts, so decided I would try & get it up and running. The ignition switch was missing, but I had a spare so replaced that. Coil was missing so borrowed the one from the other car.

I now have starter engaging, spark at points, but she is not firing yet. The petrol is at least 3 years old so I have drained that and replaced with new go juice. Hopefully this is the only problem.

Should I be expecting her to try & fire with old petrol, or should I be checking elsewhere do you think.

BTW, is the standard coil for the 1976 2500TC 12V or 6V, I will have to get one & there are no markings on the old one.

Thanks for any assistance.

It should run on three year old petrol.

Are the plugs getting wet with fuel?

On a car which been left unused for a couple of year the trouble is often that the jets in the carbs get blocked with the residue of the fuel which has evaporated out of them.

Just give them a clean and it should go.

Make sure you have a spark at the plugs too. Distributor cap and rotor arm problems are quite common.

Whoo hoo, the old girl runs.

Must have been either the new petrol, or a spark plug I replaced, or replacing the vacuum line to the dizzy, but after giving it a good talking too and a hot cup of tea, after a bit of coughing and spluttering she burst into life :D

now to get it running properly, carby setup, check brake system etc - lots of fun.
