Over the Christmas period the battery in the PI decided to finally give up the ghost. Even after a charge it would only crank the engine for a few seconds before giving up again.

I spent some time deciding on a new battery type, looking at 069, 071, 072 types. in the end I got an 096R, which is 72Ah and 680 CCA, all for £70. It fits perfectly, (1971 car with the bigger battery tray) and really cranks the engine with some gusto!

The 096R is not the same as the 096 - it has the terminals 'reversed' and on the correct side for the Triumph. No cable extending needed.

Handy to know. How do you mean "larger" battery tray. I've always found them long and narrow with about a 1/3 rd of the battery hanging over. The clamp does it job but is close to knocking against the alternator if the engine is lumpy with worn mounts.

Unipart have deleted the 3015 heavy duty battery and kept the 3038 standard. This is typical stupid thinking. Get rid of a battery that will fire-up four and six pots for up to five years and keep stocking a battery that is only good for four pots and three years.

The earlier cars had a wider battery tray. Later ones had a narrower tray to avoid the alternator, I think when the twin HS6s/long inlet manifold appeared. The changover was around 1974 I guess.

The clearance to the alternator is better with the new battery - it's not quite so tall as the old one. The 2000 is different however. It's an early car with wider battery tray but has twin HS6s/long manifold, and the engine mounting arrangement to suit. Still plenty of room though.

I have a slightly bigger battery on my Pi. Bought on error, due to the motor factors not knowing what one should fit. With some adjustment on the alternator and a smaller fan belt it fits just fine.I quite like the idea of a bigger battery, and I have found it to be a great performer. Last year I forgot to disconnect it and come spring it fired-up the Pi with no effort at all.

Would this be suitable? (Don't particularly have to buy a Bosch, but I have been impressed by the one in my TR8)

I can't remember who I got the battery from - it was from home over Christmas - but it could have been alpha-batteries. The battery I got wasn't Bosch, I just got one with a 3 or 4 year warrenty.

I can have a look tonight if you like?

The car turns over and start really well now!
