If removing the calipers it helps to loosen the other strut to hub bolts rather than just removing the caliper ones, makes it easier to get the caliper bolts through afterwards as there is a bit of extra movement.

That sounds like a good trick.I've had problems in the past with those shields but never thought of doing that.
1976 2500 TC. converted to S specs.

Lots of bits

1999 BMW Z3.
2006 BMW 325ti.
Hopefully not needing too many bits.

Sorbs is spot on. The strut is fixed to the hub via 4 bolts, (ask Alan!), 1 of which is also used for the caliper. The opposing bolt has a spacer the thickness of the caliper bracket thingy.

If you don't slacken the other 3 bolts, getting the caliper off/on could well be very difficult.

I can't say I've ever had any problems with the caliper or the stone guard. Or maybe it was such a hassle that I have delibrately forgotten!

Cheers,
Mike.

Did the other wheel bearing today - loosening the other bolts to remove the brake caliper makes life *much* easier.

Quite amazed how much old grease there was in the hub. I should think that the centre void was completely packed with old grease - smelt like some of it was the original from 1972 when the car was built.
