Oil Cooler size

Hi just a quickie what would be an appropriate size oil cooler for the 2500 engine?

when I first built my 2.5 p.i. engined MK 1 I fitted an oil cooler (I forget the size) but on running the car I felt that it was not really doing anything. I'm nearing the end of a second rebuild and decided to not use the oil cooler.

Hello Alec,

I believe that Gary's Triumph engine is in a non-Triumph car, which just might have an effect on oil temperature.

I fitted an oil cooler with thermostat to my 2500 for towing a very heavy caravan many years ago. It helped when climbing steep gradients with the caravan and car fully loaded, but tests showed that under other circumstances the thermostat didn't open. When I finished with caravanning I removed the cooler assembly and converted the cylinder block adaptor for non-cooler use.

Yes as David states my engine is fitted in a 1949 AC 2 litre saloon.

Engine runs at about 80 degrees on original AC rad with kenlowe. Oil pressure approx 70 cold and 25 hot at idle (this is read on original AC capillary gauge). It has been bored to 2600cc, Piper TR65P2TY Ultimate road cam, balanced pistons, 2500S Head skimmed 10 thou, slightly larger valves (cant remember how much but a tad), lead free inserts.

I was just looking to get best cooling for engine, however after much searching of Forums etc it seems that Oil coolers are not best recommended.


David, I am off to Classic Le Mans in the old girl next month, I will see how she behaves on trip as only done 600 miles since engine build, will get a few under her belt before trip. I will PM you re the cooler and yes in UK down in rural Kent.
