Alf Hutchinson's lovely Mk 2 2000 for sale on EBay

#1 Post by johnnydog »

For those in the market for a very original low mileage car, Alf Hutchinson's lovely Triumph 2000 Mk 2 is currently up for sale on EBay. Alf, who sadly passed away recently, and his car were well known within the Register. Be nice to see the car remain within the Register.

Can't help thinking that the starting price is a little high, especially as a bid of that amount would be 'reserve not met'. I've no doubt it's worth that and more, after all, most of us know the car, but I feel a lower starting price would have got the ball rolling quicker.

This car was set (we think) to go to a good home, but sadly now it could go anywhere. My fear is that some dealer will try to make a quick buck out of it.

It is a very nice car, but not quite as original as advertised; manual/overdrive gearbox fitted (unknown mileage, ex scrapped 2500S), 3.45 diff and PAS fitted (from same 2500S), oil pressure gauge fitted to centre dashboard panel, etc. No MoT, needs recommissioning, but brakes free and I freed off the clutch and set up the carburettors a couple of weeks ago. I believe the original manual steering parts and the original 4.11 diff are available, but I know for sure that the original gearbox is not.

Let's hope that it ends up with someone who will look after it, as Alf would have wanted.

Oh yes, those wheels ... Um, an acquired taste, and definitely not original! Also from the previously mentioned 2500S (and of course not a standard fitment on that either). I don't recall seeing the original wheels but there is a chance that they may still be around.

Someone wanting a solid and as near original body as possible, then this would be definitely worth considering. The last time I saw it, there were a couple of very minor areas that had been cosmetically touched in, but these weren't due to corrosion, but minor imperfections in the paint finish. Having said that, they were only very minor areas and nothing that detracted from the cars appearance. Alf used to talk about his use of and the anti corrosion benefits of Shell Ensis oil that he had injected into the sills and other corrosion prone areas, which can only have been of benefit to help preserve the car. I wasn't aware of the gearbox and diff changes, although a manual overdrive box and PAS would be considered by many as an improvement. The diff and other changes (wheels, oil pressure gauge etc) are not major issues to remedy or put back to original if any new owner chose to do so.
Not my favourite colour, but obviously that is a personal thing, but definitely a car worth a look if anyone is after a very good example. It isn't known what they actually want for it, but compared to cheaper cars that require some panel replacement, it possibly puts the price into perspective.

Well well, up to £8,000 now, still with 2 and a half days to go! Alf would have been very proud, God bless him.

Nice to see so many nice 2000/2500's for sale, but the mileage and info given on the advert for the car isn't matched by the MOT history. It had a higher mileage reading in 1998 than it had in 2012/2013. I sold a genuine 20,000 mile example last year and it was so nice nothing had been upgraded /changed or anything, it was as it came out of the factory.
There is an Irish registered car on a 'T' plate and the guy says it hasn't had or needed any work done and is solid underneath, again not confirmed by the MOT history as it failed on a few occasions because of excessive corrosion to the underside of the car.
Check the site out when you are interested in buying a 'Perfect' example...the advisories are there for all to see.

How would you know this? MOT computer records only go back as far as 2005. I'm not convinced of the accuracy of this service anyway, especially for older vehicles. The MOT printout for this particular car lists it as July 1971 regd, which it obviously isn't, but the main DVLA site https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ lists it as April 1973 regd, which is what the ad says it is.

Alf Hutchinson's lovely Mk 2 2000 for sale on EBay

Look at the pictures. Alf bought it in 98 with 7500 miles on it. I remember when he bought it. Lots of changes to it have been made, it's no longer original. However, it's a very good car.

I got the mileage in '98 from the picture in the ad and the mileage in 2012/13 from the MOT site.
The accuracy of the site is only compromised by the guy writing down the details, i.e. 1971 instead of 1973, there is a Triumph 1300 fwd on the site and the guy conducting the test has marked it down as a Dolomite, but it doesn't make it a Dolomite, but the failure notification and the advisories are accurate enough, all my MOT'S on the site are exactly as they are on my sheet.
Nobody is slagging the lovely car off, just making an observation, maybe in all those upgrades/modifications a new speedo was fitted,
it was only at 766 miles or so in 2008. Just find it hard to understand how such a low mileage car needed so much, my low low mileage car only ever had bulbs and ball joints and the odd perished tyre (from lack of use) replaced, it was a '73 car as well (what a great year)
