Autobox 35
Autobox 35
Ok need help again . Just replaced the auto box on the engine. When engine revved up there is metallic high pitch noise , maybe the flexiplate is cracked ? . When the new box was fitted we heard the bush at the end of the crankshaft was missing and also the dowels. Box to be removed again
, where can I get the dowels and the bush . Regards Bruce

Re: Autobox 35
In my fairly limited experience with cracked flexplates (2 on Triumph 2000s, 1 on a Morris Oxford) the noise produced was surprisingly deep, more a rumble than a high pitched noise, and it was more prominent under the no-load condition if I recall correctly from several decades ago. The gearbox being fitted without the bush and dowel (singular, not plural) seems quite an odd thing to do and I'd guess is related to the noise. Perhaps Chris Witor can supply?
Re: Autobox 35
Hi thanks for thr quick feedback . Going to the garage to listen to the problem am tomorrow. The box will be dropped away again to inspect for damage. I think Chris Witor is based in Wookey hole nr wells, is that correct ? I'll get dowels fitted but the main problem is sourcing the bush for the crankshaft to correctly mate to the spigot on the back of the torque convertor. Ps the engine and box are fitred to 1948 Triumph Roadster. Re: Autobox 35
Would recommend fitting the strengthened flexiplate that Chris offers................
I have had two go, the original and a NOS one.
When the NOS one went it sounded rather like bottom end rattle but when engine was stripped nothing was found but hair-line crack founfd on the flexiplate.

Re: Autobox 35
Just though , I have a new flex drive plate form Chris and I understand that I can just sandwich it between the existing flexiplate and the torque convertor . Chris advised there should be sufficient space to still bolt everything up ( i.e the additional flexiplate thickness can be accommodated in the existing gearbox and torque converter assembly) .Bruce wrote:Hello all , went to see Chris Witor am today , very helpful and he has loads of stock .
