Molybdenum and the Wailing Diff

No, it's not the title of a 1950's Bodice Ripper.

Like many Triumph owners my diff is flippin noisy. Now I was staying at Killin the other week and was doing some work on the car when this old giffer stopped for a chat. He'd had a couple of Stags, a TR6 and a 2000 in the past and he said that what he used to do was to put a Molybdenum based lube into the diff, the metal (for Molybdenum is a metal) revitalises the bearings and cogs, incidentally, he was a chemical engineer by trade and said that when he was in the army, they used to use Molybdenum a lot for so they could hear themselves think inside the Centurion tanks.

I've just ordered an old diff from ebay which I am going to rebuild to the best of my abilities - in the meantime I was thinking about lobbing some Moly into the current diff.

What you mean that you can load a diff with lead?....only if it's shot though!

Dad says that was called 'Molyslip', but he couldn't vouch for it's worth. It was said to coat the internals allowing the 'box or diff to run low on oil without immediate damage.

Molydeb whatsit is CV joint grease. Far to thick for the diff.

Molyslip is the product that used to be sold as "shuts noisy things up". (tried it on the kids, doesn't work!)

Tried it on a whining diff years ago, doesn't work there either!

If the diff whines, its because its buggered. Fix it, or get another one!

Do some research on Royal Purple oils - they make engine and gear oils that contain molybdenum.

I've never used it myself, but plenty of people rave about it.

yes, but the idea is to shut it up a wee bit whilst I re build the 2500 diff I bought on ebay last week! not looking for snake oil - just a stop gap - the car is my daily driver afterall.

Try these (advertise on Ebay) seems have had good results and a mate as used in his diff and was impressed.
