The mother of all misfires !

#1 Post by dmcrobin »

So, took the 2500 S to Norfolk for the weekend after fitting Chris Witor's semi sports exhaust which sounds lovely!

As well as the exhaust, on Friday we replaced cap, leads, rotor, plugs, points and condensor which also seemed to cure a gradually getting worse misfire, the points were burnt out.

So 250 odd miles later, 70 miles from home I notice the rev counter jumping around, then for the remainder of the journey home it started misfiring really badly, as I pulled in the drive it died and won't now restart - lucky or what !

So, I'm guessing the coil is knackered, any other suggestions ?

In the cap it does look like there has been a bit of arcing going on ?

Do I just fit a standard 6v ballast coil as per original, or is there any reason not to fit a 12v one ? Rimmers list Lucas DLB110 as the correct one for a 2500 S.

Any advice or assistance gratefully relieved.

Cheers

Sounds like the points gap is too big........ they tend to do this with a over large gap.

Check the points gap (may have slipped after you changed them if not tight enough?) or, you do need to check the points gap on all 6 areas of the cam...... and then set the gap to the largest one.

Hi Robin, nice to see you ditched the pea shooter (and to hear from you!).

The exhaust should have made the estate a little more lively, funnily enough there is another guy on this forum with an 'S' estate with the same 'lincolnshire strangler' syatem.

I always set the points by dwell angle, this averages the adjustment across all six lobe positions, thus allowing for the inevitable wear.

Incidentally it was 37years ago yesterday that HOE was first registered to BL Power and Transmissions division and 26years ago yesterday that I passed my driving test.

You passed your driving test when you where 24 then Colin?.............

As for dwell angles, never understood that at all. I used to set mine up with feeler gauges...... hence my preference for electronic ignition!

Perhaps you could explain Dwell to us Colin.................?

17years 4mths and 30days actually

The reason you have no knowledge is that you have never owned a slant four Dolomite, those Delco dizzys were ruined by 10yrs old!

So here goes
Dwell angle refers to the degrees, or time, during which the breaker points are closed in every rotation of the dizzy cam. The closed points serve as a path for current flow from the battery to the ignition coil, so that the energy can be built up to give a spark. If the dwell angle is too small the points gap is too wide, resulting in a weak spark, giving poor acceleration or high speed performance. If the dwell angle is too large, the points gap is too narrow which often causes rapid deterioration of the points. You will need a meter for this and the dwell angle for the particular vehicle. My timing light has the dwell meter built in.

Colin.

Hi Alan / Colin

Thanks, I'll check the points, infact I think I'll replace them with electronics for reliability and also fit a new coil as I'm fairly sure the coil is shot too.

New exhaust is much better, engine is much more free revving and when it wasn't misfiring it sounded lovely - so you are both correct, the Rimmers system is dog s**t !

You guys going to BL day ?

Cheers

I shan't be going, owing to not owning a working BL car to go in!

oh yeah, forgot about "Arnie!"

I may see if we can come for a bit, either in the Acclaim-inator or maybe just as an interloper in the increasingly tired and battle-scared Audi......

Depends what Sam is working, might just be me and the girls.

I assume we can just turn up on the day?
