As for the question regarding the stag to the 2000 autos being the same, they are definately not. The BW35 was trashed in my 2000, and I sourced one from a stag for $200!! It was great, or so I thought, and I found that aside from the bellhousing being different, the speedo cable comes off the opposite side of the transmission, and the input shafts are different, so the torque converters are not interchangable.... At least this is what I was told, and the gentleman at the auto rebuild shop even pulled out dusty old books and showed me the 8-10 different BW35 transmissions, and the 6 cylinder cars had one input shaft, and the V8 had another.
As a side note, a gentleman in the USA Stag club, took an automatic from a 740 Volvo, and used the cable speedo from a 240 series Volvo to have a cable speedo, used an adapter for the bellhousing, and now has a 4 speed automatic. Unfortunately I do not remember the particulars.
Kyle.

A gearbox from an older Mercedes may be an option too.
The 4 speeder on my 1990 300E has a cable speedo drive and I believe that the gearbox is mechanically controlled rather than by a load of ECUs which would ease retro fitment to another car.
