su carbs
Re: su carbs
Hello Mike,
that's for a HS4, with spring loaded needles (3 letters) the first letter is 'A' for a 0.090" jet H*2 and H*4 with the first letter 'B' for a 0.100" jet, H*6. It doesn't look as if they did a spring loaded needle for the H*8 series?

Re: su carbs
Hi Alec,
I've got the Burlen books in a book case somewhere that should state the needles. Interesting on the 'A' and 'B' for different jet sizes though. You learn something new everyday!
Cheers,
Mike.

Hello Mike,
The needle I quoted came from the Burlen workshop manual, however they also do a little booklet listing the range of needles with dimensions, which the manual doesn't.

Re: su carbs
Hi Alec,
Yes, I've got both of those. They were very helpful when I was playing with needles on the 2000 having fitted twin HS6s. Of course these days it's all available on t'internet!
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: su carbs
You say the car smokes, but what colour is the smoke? When too rich, I would expect it to run badly before it smokes a lot. Black smoke is probably too rich mixture, blue smoke burning oil. There are other colours associated with other issues too!
the smoke is black and the carbs have bu****ed up the plugs thus meaning i had to replace them and smells very ritch to

Re: su carbs
Hi Andew,
It would be worth seeing what the current needles are. There's no point in trying to get the mixture right unless some 'nearly' correct ones are in there. Then we can adjust it at tickover and it should be Ok over the rev and load range.
I'll try and get over some time to have a play, but it's not worth it until the needles are at least 2000 spec ones.
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: su carbs
Hello Andrew,
those needles are for a HS6, and are standard needles for a 2.5 T.C.. The needle for a 2000 on HS6 is BCY, but in reallity there is very little difference between yours and the correct needles so they should run OK once adjusted.

Re: su carbs
I thought we had decided that these were HS4s, not HS6s. Can you fit HS6s on the short manifold? Don't know the answer to that one.
BDB needles (from an HS6) would need a 0.1" jet, but if an HS4 has a 0.09" jet, then the needles would bind I'd have thought and the engine would not run at all?
Alec, you mentioned the needle/jet sizes for HS4/HS6 - have I interpreted your post OK?
Cheers,
Mike.
