Suspicions?

#1 Post by englishbull »

Firstly as anybody had any dealings with these people?

Only just had a phonecall from a vehicle hiring company asking if my MK1 PI was still for sale? and then they said they didn't want to buy it but wanted to rent it????????? :?:

They said they usually specialising in more executive cars like Aston Martin,Jaguar and the likes for hiring out etc.I have checked the website and all seems genuine.

Anyway, they said they had a list of 42 cars to get on which a Triumph MK1 PI was one of them.

What they want to do is hire the car for approx 1000 miles :? and will be driven by engineers from Toyota?????????................again I a little dubious.

I went onto say that my car is a Triumph and he said yes................Toyota want to drive all of the 42 cars on the list and do checks with the hope of producing a future retro classic car.......... :D

Now came to hire price and he said they would want the PI for a month and would pay approx £2k for the privilage....................nice but they said the locations are a secret as they don't want Joe Public getting hold of this..............that the worrying aspect.
However, if they was to give a cheque as a deposit then that be different.............just a little apprehensive about it all.

What think?

I think you are dead right to be suspicious! It sounds like a con to me, but then I am very cynical. A cheque for a deposit isn't of any value as it could be a forgery - even bank drafts have been forged. I think a deposit of say, £10k to be held in escrow by your bank by way of a deposit to be returned once you get the car back in the same condition that it was loaned might be a way of smoking out whther they are serious or it is a fraud.
I couldn't find any link to a website, but these are easily faked as well, especially if it is by way of a link inside an email.

What was the catch phrase of the REAL HUSTLE ?? If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is .... TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE !! Can't say I would let a car go who knows where, for a month, before I could raise the alarm !! ...especially if THEY contacted YOU !! Andy

Lee I can't see anywhere on your post what the company's name was that did the hiring and wanted to hire your car? Maybe someone on here would know the company by dealings or reputation.
If you have the company name try asking them about it by ringing them up rather than them ringing you.
As Kevin and Andy have both said it sounds too good to be true and you would certainly want to see some much better assurances (financial especially!) that your car was going to return afterwards. Maybe along the lines of 'they pay you £10k and you give them this minus your £2k back when the car gets back and you are satisfied it is in the same condition you hired it to them in.' Probably what Kevin is suggesting.

Tread carefully Lee.

Check this out Lee

One thing of note is the change of address from that registered at companies house!

Also when you scroll down, their accounts don't suggest a thriving business to my untrained eye, especially recently. Perhaps someone else will have a differing viewpoint.
