Stag type alloy wheels for 1974 2500TC

#1 Post by Bill Reed »

I'm Thinking of buying Stag type alloy wheels for my 1974 2500TC.
My current wheels measure 14 inch diameter inside the rim lip.
I am told the wheels I am thinking of buying measure 15 and 5 sixteenth inches overall outside rim.

From Rimmers site I see only 14 inch wheels advertised. Were the alloy wheels made in other sizes?
And how about tyre size to make rolling diameter correct? I've just had the speedo reconditoned!

I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who has fitted / knows about Stag type / 2500S wheels.

Your car should have 13" wheels. Check the tyres you have fitted, they will say something like 175 R 13 or 175 70 13. The last figures are the size of wheel. It may be you have Stag steel wheels which are 14".
The S/Stag alloys are a direct replacement and are 14" wheels. Don't forget to get steel alloy wheel nuts! You will need a 175 70 14 tyre on these wheels to maintain something close to the original rolling radius.

Bill, this site is invaluable for changing rim/ tyre sizes http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

I searched for Stag style alloys in 15" recently and didn't have any luck finding anything that would fit. Good luck. :D

Hello Bill,

The five-spoke alloy wheels fitted to later Stags and 2500S saloons/estates were a GKN/Triumph design exclusive to that company (forgetting some late MGBs which also got similar fitments). All - I believe - were 14" diameter and 5.5" rim width.

I'm not aware of anyone ever having offered reproduction wheels to the Stag/2500S pattern in a larger diameter (though happy to be corrected!). There was a contemporary aftermarket alloy of five-spoke design (name/manufacture escapes me) which was not dissimilar to the Triumph offering but certainly not identical - you sometimes still come across these fitted to Stags, but in what sizes they were/are available I know not. Also, a 15 5/16 " rim diameter seems a little odd to me - are the ones you have been offered perhaps intended to accommodate metric-sized tyres, I wonder?

As Charles has said, genuine Stag/2500S alloys should work as a direct bolt-on fitment for your 2500TC, subject to his comments regarding wheelnuts and tyre sizes.

Regards,

Performance Wheels in Australia make a similar style wheel in 15" (Performance Challenger); however, my recent enquiries indicated the required offset isn't made.
Unfortunately it is only available in an 8P Offset, with no possibility of giving it more offset due to the style of casting. The only wheel we can supply in a 25P is the Superlite style. ( Minilite copy)

Hi Bill,

Well, I have just got a set of 'S' alloys refurbished with new tyres. I plan to fit them to my blue PI tomorrow and take the car to Stoneleigh for the club stand on Sunday. Please feel free to have a look!

Cheers,
Mike.
