PI estate plumbing

#1 Post by Charles H »

Would anyone have any images of the PI plumbing in a Mk2 estate car? My PI project means that I need to know where the various components sit, and where the two return pipes fit. Can anyone help?

It would help me as well. Are we involved with the same sort of project Charles ...... converting a non-PI estate to PI?

I have a an original diagram somewhere which I used when I re converted my PI Estate back to injection. I'll see if I can dig it out and scan it.

Ted
I have a Stag with a PI engine in it currently on carbs! I have just about got all the bits together, but still need the main pressurised feed pipe and prv/threeway connector and I should be ready to do it. The Stag uses an estate fuel tank which is of course different to the saloon!
Brian, any images/diagrams will be very useful, thank you.

Hi Charles,

I have scanned the page I used but the file is too big for here. If you would like to PM me your email address I could email it maybe?

There are some quite good pictures in the original WSM. I can scan those if it might help.

I think I've found a distributor clamp!

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi Charles
You may have seen the abridged version of my article on the subject of installing pi into a mk2 2000 estate in the SixAppeal before last. I didn't carry out the conversion in quite the conventional way but it has been very successful none the less. If you think I can help then please PM me with your queries.

Thank you David.
I now have amassed most of the kit I need. I have a good correct MU, early throttle bodies and linkage kit. I will re bush this with CW Superflex. I have the pedestal and correct distributor, fuel filter housing and a Bosch pump. All I am still searching for is a high pressure fuel line and a PRV complete assembly including the three way brass unit. I am slowly cleaning up, inspecting and reassembling everything whilst the car is still mobile on the SU carbs and hope to swap it all once I am happy all is ready. The psiting of the equipment in the boot can obviously be done prior to the final fit.
I feel that in the back of my mind that a Bosch pump needs a head of fuel that the estae tank doesn't really give. Is this my imagination or is there some truth in this? I intend to locate it as low as possible.

Hello Charles,

As a rule, Bosch pumps don't draw (suck) as strongly as the Lucas PI unit, despite their greater rated throughput, hence the use of big-bore inlet pipes/hoses on many OEM installations. Also, although the feed pipes on the Triumph estate draw from the tank bottom, they exit from the tank top rather than the base as on a saloon, which doesn't do much to promote good flow with a near-empty tank.

It would be interesting to hear from anyone on this Forum with hands-on experience of running a Bosch pump on a PI estate as to the pros and cons of the set-up, but I would suggest that you may need to consider incorporating a high-volume, low-pressure 'helper' pump or an in-line swirlpot (oversize filter?) to help maintain a constant head of fuel at the injection pump inlet.

Regards,
Jonathan Lewis
