Also, did you say the diff whined a bit? They often do, as do the manual gearboxes. Don't let anyone tell you that it's normal though. It's not a big issue as long as they are kept topped up with oil but good ones should be silent. It makes a good bargaining point. Budget on a couple of hundred quid each for re-con items. Changing diffs is very easy, gearboxes are a little more of a kerfuffle but no more so than usual.

I would never jack an old car under the sills. Its just asking for a nasty crunching sound. Why stress the metal at this weak point ? Under the suspension is always best - even for a modern car. The jack points are not part of the structural strength of the car and nothing is lost by them being covered. In fact everything to gain as no-one is going to stick a b..... great jack in the wrong place. BUT definitely drill several drain holes. I would say it also needs a few at the back of the cill just above the lip, where the inner panel is fixed with the outer sill. Or am I imagining some other vehicles construction? £1800 is a good price.
